In East Africa, the specialty of paediatric surgery has equally evolved, although at a slower pace and caring for children with colorectal malformations is challenging especially in settings where resources are limited. As attempts are now being made to establish expertise in caring for these children, In 2013, at the “District Hospital” City of Kisumu (Kenya), a course consisting of 4 doctors and 38 nurses, was coordinated by Prof. Carlo Pezcoller (Italy) in collaboration with Prof. Harikesh Buch (India) and Rosine Van Den Bulck- stoma nurse( Belguim) on colorectal surgeries and stoma care. The city of Kisumu was chosen for his strategic position which would allow the participation of doctors and nurses from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

 

After the training, Lameck Odero  founded Nyanza Kenya Ostomy Association in  2013 with the goal of offering a long term and sustainable assistance through surgical missions, training and distribution of donated ostomy supplies. In the same year, in partnership with charitable organisations and volunteer medical team, we started conducting surgical missions twice a year  in Tanzania for children across East Africa.
